Kenneth Guscotte Rea

Kenneth Guscotte Rea was born on June 24, 1878, in Montreal, Quebec.
He studied architecture at McGill University, and in 1894, he apprenticed with Alexander Francis Dunlop. In 1900, he went to Boston and worked for the firm of Shepley, Ruttan and Coolidge, and in 1902, in New York City, for the firm of Cram, Goodhue and Ferguson. He designed churches and the military academy at West Point. In 1905, Rea returned to Montreal and became a partner in the Montreal Light, Heat and Power Company. He then went on to practice architecture on his own and designed several commercial buildings as well as numerous residences in Montreal's Golden Square Mile.
In 1916, he married Claire Hamilton Raiguel. He died on September 6, 1941, in Montreal, Quebec.
Meredith Royds, the grand-daughter of Kenneth Guscotte Rea, gave the drawings to the CAC in 1975.
Drawings, photographs and articles for the residences of J.W. McConnell were donated to the John Bland Canadian Architecture Collection by Kathleen McConnell Laing.Also part of the donation were drawings and photographs of other residences for J. W. McConnell.

Kenneth Guscotte Rea (1878-1941) was born in Montreal and studied at McGill University. He received training in architecture as an apprentice with the Montreal architectural firm of Alexander Francis Dunlop (1842-1923). In 1900 Rea moved to Boston where he worked at the architectural firm of Shepley, Ruttan and Coolidge; later, in 1902, he worked in New York City for the firm of Cram, Goodhue and Ferguson. Upon Rea's return to Montreal in 1905, he first found employment with the Montreal Light, Heat and Power Company and later practised architecture independently. During his career, Rea designed a number of bank buildings, including branches of the Royal Bank in Vancouver, Edmonton, and Montreal, and branches of the Bank of Montreal for Quebec City, Vancouver, and Victoria.
