Benjamin Hall was born on 1 June 1779 in Andover, Massachusetts, to William Hall and Christina Barbara Juncken Hall. He moved to Montreal in approximately 1800, where he established himself as a merchant and farmer. Hall was a member of the Montreal Militia, rising to the rank of Major by his retirement. He was also a member of the Masonic Union Lodge 8. Hall sat on the board of directors of the Bank of Canada in 1819. On 5 March 1818, he married Harriet Morrison, daughter of the merchant James Morrison and Suzanne LePallieur. Though they did not have children of their own, they raised their nieces Charlotte and Harriet Hall after the deaths of their parents, John Hall and Charlotte Morrison. Hall died in his Montreal home, Mount Tranquil, on 11 February 1863.
A page from a letterbook in Benjamin Hall's hand with copies of his correspondence, including an undated letter and one dated 11 May 1813. One letter is addressed to Richard Townsend & Sons and was written from Montreal.
