Jack McCrae, Campbell Gwyn, and one of his nephews with two friends were there for Christmas. Details of the Christmas in the wards of the Examination Schools. They do not have many serious cases and no typhoid. Archibald Malloch who visited them for Christmas said there were nearly 3000 cases in the Dunkirk district. The country is doing well and they are optimistic as the Germans are still in Belgium. American sympathy, moral and pecuniary, are very appreciated in England. Civilities.

Hopes that Thayer will accept. There is a comic element in the whole affair if it ends in Thayer and Barker changing places. Sorry for Barker. Gives his opinion on the decision of the University in changing the conditions of tenure of a Professorship. Repeats that it will never do to have a man as chief who would necessarily play 2nd or 3rd fiddle in the community. Mentions that he approves Xian's suggestion which is one Pepper had in mind 20 years ago. He is looking forward to the October meeting and is arranging to leave September 5th. Asks him to send his remarks on Fitz. Mitchell is a sad loss, he owes him much. Civilities.

Sorry that Sprunt will not go to the Paignton Hospital, as they were looking forward so much to having him. Everything goes on here satisfactorily. They received orders to increase the number of the beds, proportionally to the number of men who will go to the front this spring. Details about the cases of frostbite. They are encouraged by the situation in France and by the fact that Germany has not finished with Belgium. Glad to hear that the work goes well. Revere is getting ready to go with a Canadian Contingent, and will possibly go with Birkett, Campbell Howard, and W.W. Francis. He is interested in literature and arts. Deplores that the war is going to interrupt his studies. Civilities.
