History

James Hamilton Rowan was born c 1831 in Ireland.

He was a civil engineer and architect. He worked for the Public Works, canals, and railways, subsequently becoming a District Engineer for the Eastern Section of the Canadian Pacific Railway in Manitoba. He was also a founding member of the Manitoba Historical Society. He participated in the 1878 ceremony to mark the opening of the first railway to Winnipeg. He contributed articles for the Manitoba Historical Society, published in Manitoba Daily Free Press. As an architect, he was successful in obtaining several commissions for commercial blocks and residential buildings. In 1892, he moved to Chile, South America.

In 1860, he married Hannah Wilson.
